Secondary school in the Lower Austrian state hospital
Education and recovery go hand in hand. As a school authority, the market town of Guntramsdorf supports young people in keeping up with their schooling despite health challenges. A specialised educational programme offered at Lower Austrian regional hospitals ensures that education continues in a professional and motivating environment even during a hospital stay.
Tasks
The Upper Secondary School at the Lower Austria Provincial Hospital supports pupils who wish to successfully complete their respective year groups despite a prolonged hospital stay.
The school caters only for pupils in Years 9 to 13 from general secondary schools and vocational secondary schools.
Younger pupils (i.e. those of compulsory school age) are supported by the hospital school, with the exception of a few subjects.

Organisation
Lessons are taught on an individual basis or in small groups. The teachers maintain close contact with the pupils’ home schools to ensure they achieve the best possible academic results.
Pupils receiving hospital treatment are supported by HILK as soon as they wish to be and provided there are no medical reasons preventing this.
Curriculum
The curriculum of the pupil’s previous school applies.
Lessons are taught by teachers from that school.
Performance assessment
Issues relating to the assessment of pupils’ performance are discussed by HILK teachers with the relevant class teachers.
The assessment of performance is organised within the framework of the HILK. The assessment of performance is the responsibility of the class teachers at the pupils’ home schools.
Similarly, school reports and progress reports are issued by the home school.
