Loss and discovery of items

The Austria-wide online platform www.fundamt.gv.at is available 24 hours a day to help you find lost or forgotten items.

Procedure in the event of loss

If the online search yields no results, please contact directly the local authority in whose administrative area the item is believed to have been lost.

Please note: Since 1 February 2003, responsibility for lost property has rested exclusively with the local authorities. Police and gendarmerie stations are unable to provide any information on this matter.

Procedure for finds

If the value of a found object exceeds €10, or if the item is clearly of significance to the owner, there is a legal obligation to hand it in to the relevant authority.

  • Competent authority: As a rule, this is the local authority in the area where the item was found.

  • Exception: It is not possible to hand in found items to the police. The only exceptions to this are dangerous finds such as firearms, explosives or munitions. These must be reported to or handed in at a police station.
