Separation ABC

Waste separation makes a significant contribution to environmental protection. A detailed guide is available to download in the form of the latest ‘Waste Separation Guide’.

Residual waste

Residual waste comprises that portion of waste which cannot be recycled as recyclable material or composted.

  • Collection: Bins are emptied every fortnight in accordance with the current collection schedule.

  • Placement: Bins must be placed out by 6.30 am at the latest on collection day.

  • Large bins (1100 litres): Collection from residential estates takes place according to the collection schedule. If a public holiday falls on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, the collection is postponed accordingly.

  • Residual waste bags: Additional bags are available from the Citizens’ Service Centre for €4.40 or from the Recycling Centre (ASZ) for €5.

Plastics

Plastic waste should be disposed of in the yellow bag (private households) or the yellow bin (apartment blocks).

  • Collection: Only place fully filled bags out for collection by 6.30 am at the latest.

  • Distribution: One roll of 13 bags is issued per household annually. If you require more, please contact the Citizens’ Service.

  • Conservation of resources: Due to limited supplies, please use the bags sparingly and exclusively for their intended purpose.

  • SPACE-SAVING TIP: Unscrew the cap, squeeze the bottle in the middle, fold the base down and screw the cap back on.

  • Important note on waste separation: Incorrect disposal (up to 30% residual waste in plastic bins) incurs high additional disposal costs. Careful separation helps to save costs.

Organic waste bin - Organic waste

The brown bin is intended for compostable waste, mainly of plant origin.

  • Collection frequency: From the beginning of March to the end of November, collection takes place weekly; for the rest of the year, it is fortnightly according to the collection schedule.

  • Note: Compostable waste cannot be disposed of in bags.

  • Hygiene benefit: To keep the organic waste bin (120 litres) clean, biodegradable cornstarch bags are available from the Citizens’ Service. These reduce odours and bacterial growth.

Tree and shrub pruning

Bundled tree and shrub cuttings (maximum length 1.5 metres) are collected separately from bulky waste four times a year.

  • Collection dates for 2026: 20 April / 18 May / 14 September / 19 October

  • Disposal alternatives: Smaller quantities can be composted in the garden or shredded and disposed of in the organic waste bin.

  • Recycling centre drop-off: Larger quantities of garden waste (leaves, grass, branches) can be dropped off free of charge at the recycling centre. Bags will not be collected during collection.
