Guntramsdorf Roll Engraving Museum
It is as if time has stood still: the machines, wheels and transmission belts of the cylinder engraving workshop, founded in 1911, lie dormant – yet in the museum they come back to life. Until 1986, this workshop – unique in Austria – supplied national and international industries with artistically engraved printing and embossing cylinders for over 75 years.
The hand engraving practised here is regarded as the pinnacle of industrial and commercial precision work. Technical change brought the business to an end, but the fully preserved complex, covering some 250 m², remained intact. All the machines, tools and the rare central transmission system still function today – just as they have for decades – at the touch of a button.
Established in 1989 and listed as a historic monument, the museum is a unique example of a complete late 19th-century factory complex and ranks among the most photographed museums. Discover the history, everyday working life, historic machinery and the art of moletten engraving – or experience the special atmosphere during a visit to the site.
